The number of individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus is increasing. Onychomycosis is often observed in diabetics. A total of 110 diabetic subjects were evaluated. Onychomycosis was present in 27 patients (24.5%). The development of onychomycosis was significantly correlated with increasing age (51.4815± 9.7), uncontrolled diabetes (levels of hemoglobin A1c and fasting blood glucose) and duration of diabetes (P=0.028). After controlling age and sex, the risk predictors for onychomycosis included a family history, special occupations and associated disease. The organisms implicated in causing onychomycosis were dermatophytes (48.1%), yeast (25.9%) then non-dermatophyte moulds.
