Abstract:
Obesity is rapidly increasing in this country and represents one ofthe greatest health concerns today. In its severe form, the onlyconsistently successful treatment for obesity is surgery. Roux-en-Ygastric bypass is the most commonly performed weight loss procedureperformed. Patients lose, on average, one third of their preoperativeweight. As a result, many/most of the obesity-related comorbidities areimproved or cured. Until the root cause of obesity is consistentlyaddressed or effective nonsurgical therapies developed, surgery willremain a common treatment for patients with severe obesity.Obesity SurgeryNumerous surgical techniques have been developed for thetreatment of severe obesity. The most common obesity surgeryprocedures performed the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the VerticalBanded Gastroplasty.Treatment may include a combination
