Quality of life in haemodialysis patients

Abstract:
Background: Health related quality of life (HRQL) is the extent to which one’s expected physical, emotional and social well-being are affected by a medical condition or its treatment. Chronic hemodialysis (HD) is both live-saving and life-altering. Many factors can affect the quality of life for HD patients. However, a good quality of life could be achieved when patients are caring for themselves in all ways: body, mind and spirit.The aim of this study: was to evaluate some HRQL indicators in ESRD patients on chronic HD therapy and its impact on patients.Subjects and methods: A total of 200 adult ESRD patients on regular HD for more than one year were included in: Group I: 100 patients receiving HD at Zagazig university hospital, Zagazig, Sharkeia, Egypt. Group II: 50 patients receiving HD at Elmbrra health insurance hospital, Zagazig, Sharkeia, Egypt. Group III: 50 patients receiving HD at Elshrouk private hospital, Mansoura, Dkahlia, Egypt.Data were collected on a prepared chart including personal, demographic, HD related data, information recorded in the last month before answering the questionnaire. Each of included patients answered KDQOL-SF modified questionnaire with variable scores. The questionnaire was formed of five sections (Your health, Your kidney disease, Effect of kidney disease on your daily life, Satisfaction with care, and Background information).
