Abstract:
Metabolic syndrome in a sample of patients with bipolar disorder in SharkiaAbstract:Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with an increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease, type2 diabetes and cerebral stroke. Bipolar disorder (BD) has often been associated with many factors known to increase cardiovascular risks such as unhealthy lifestyles, excessive cholesterol intake, cigarette smoking. The issue of metabolic abnormalities has received increased attention since the introduction of second-generation antipsychotics for BD. Several studies outside Egypt have indeed demonstrated a higher risk for obesity and diabetes in patients with BD. Several different medications have been added on to atypical antipsychotics to counter their tendency to cause weight gain. Our results confirm the high prevalence of MetS in patients with bipolar disorder (67%), and it is higher than that reported for the general population (30%).
