Abstract:
Uterine fibroids are the most common tumours in the female genital tract. Although the true incidence of fibroids is unknown owing to the high prevalence of asymptomatic patients, it is generally reported as 20% to 40% among those of reproductive age. Presence of these tumours can reduce the likelihood of pregnancy in those attempting conception .Fibroids are often described according to the layer affected in the uterus. Intramural fibroids are the most common fibroids that develop within the wall of the uterus and expand inward leading to increase the size of the uterus. Submucous fibroids are less common which project into the uterine cavity and covered by endometrium leading to abnormal uterine bleeding and infertility .Subserosal myomas originate from the serosal surface of the uterus and project outward from the uterine surface covered with peritoneum giving the uterus ”a knobby appearance” .Although the aetiology of uterine fibroids is unknown, there have been some major advances in understanding the pathogenesis of this condition. Although fibroids may be multiple or solitary in a woman’s uterus, studies have established that, irrespective of size, each fibroid develops from one single cell (the monoclonal development of fibroids concept) .
