Abstract:
Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancy that affecting women worldwide. Mastectomy operation is still the cornerstone procedure in treatment of breast cancer in many cases. Mastectomy lead to great psychological morbidity due to disturbed body image and sensation of loss of femininity. So, breast reconstruction become an integral part of breast cancer management.Immediate breast reconstruction has many advantages over delayed reconstruction. Breast reconstruction with autogenous tissue is preferred by many women. In this essay , I try to discuss the importance of immediate breast reconstruction by Latissimus dorsi (LD) myocutaneous flap especially to decrease psychological morbidity after mastectomy. The LD myocutaneous flap is a very versatile flap with very low rate of complications. There are many technical variations of the flap (standard flap, extended Latissimus dorsi flap, endoscopic harvesting of the flap and Latissimus dorsi miniflap) which facilitate its usage in breast reconstruction. The LD myocutaneous flap usually need for an additional implant to obtain symmetry with the contralateral breast.
