Abstract:
Total thyroidectomy can be undertaken safely with a low complication rate when dealing with benign thyroid disorders. Data from many studies show no significant difference in the rate of postoperative complications (e.g., recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, hypoparathyroidism and hemorrhage) associated with total thyroidectomy compared with subtotal thyroidectomy or hemithyroidectomy. This study support that total thyroidectomy is a valuable option, when surgery is indicated, for treating benign thyroid conditions such as multi-nodular goitre and Graves disease.
