Abstract:
Hypotension incidents constituted the largest category ofcomplication (Harrison, 1990).Intraoperative hypotension may Increase the peri operativemyocardial infarction as much as five folds compared to cases withouthypotension (Keenan and Boyan, 1985).-,Atypical definition of intraoperative hypotension is a 30% or greaterdecrease, in a systolic pressure from preoperative control valuesoccurring for at least 10 minutes (Harrison et aI., 1993).The most common causes of intraoperative hypotension are:dehydration caused by preoperative fasting period, side effects of manydrugs used in general anesthesia, complications of local anesthesia, hemorrhage and bleeding during operation, anti-anxiety agents, pulmonary embolism, caval compression, precardial effusion andtemponade, pneumthorax, head up position and arrhythmia (Friesen etaI., 2000).Unrecognized changes in blood pressure present danger to thepatient undergoing the surgical anesthesia, intermittent monitoring hadbecome a routine, and where it is a high expectation of significant andrapid blood pressure changes invasive intra-arterial continuous bloodpressure monitoring is used to allow early detection of potentiallydangerous trends and direct early intervention (Bodner et aI., 1990).
