Evaluation of the Placental Membrane in the Treatment of Major Burns

The treatment of the major burns is complex and challenging for plastic surgeons. A variety of techniques have been attempted in order to reduce wound sepsis, and variable results have been reported. All these techniques had limitations and variable success rates as temporary wound dressings, as these dressings had one major drawback that is rejection of the graft.The application of amniotic membrane has been suggested to serve as a suitable biological skin dressing in the 1990s. A series of different authors proved the effect of the amniotic membrane as a biological dressing, as it decreases bacterial growth, reduction of fluid, protein, heat and energy loss, as well as reduction of pain, promotion of healing, protection of underlying structures and preparation of full-thickness defects and recipient sites for autografting or delayed closure.
