Abstract:
Osteoporosis is a common clinical problem characterized by compromised bone strength and increased susceptibility to fracture.Osteoporosis can be classified into primary and secondary types. It is a silent disease, and before the first fracture occurs the only physical symptoms or signs may be back pain and loss of height with progressive kyphosis.During the past decade many new and highly efficient drug therapies have been introduced most of which rely on antiresorptive principles which include bisphosphonate therapy, estrogen, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and calcitonin , along with calcium and vitamin D, and anabolic which include parathyroid hormone (1-34).More recently, strontium ranelate, parathyroid hormone (PTH) (1-84), denosumab which is fully human antibody against RANKL, intravenous bisphosphonates, new SERMs, and others have been added to the therapeutic options of treatment of osteoporosis.
