Abstract:
Treatment of a malignant SGT depends on the primary site, histologic type and degree of differentiation, presence or absence of facial nerve paralysis, and the extent of local tumor invasion. Surgical excision is the primary treatment modality in almost every case, although definitive radiotherapy may be considered in some circumstances. Wide surgical margins of normal uninvolved tissue are required and may include skin of the face and neck, contiguous soft tissue and muscle, and mandibular or temporal bone. Salivary gland cancers respond poorly to chemotherapy, and the duration of benefit is typically short, and the intent of therapy is palliative.
