Abstract:
Mechanical ventilation is a rapidly advancing technology, intensive science and one of the most important supportive modalities used in treating critically ill patients especially those with respiratory failure. It has a definite impact on survival of sick children; Mechanical ventilation is indicated for both hypercapnic respiratory failure and hypoxemic respiratory failure. The discontinuation of mechanical ventilation needs to be carefully timed premature discontinuation places severe stress on respiratory and cardiovascular systems, the intent of the weaning process is to decrease the level of support provided by the ventilator, requiring the patient to assume a greater proportion of the ventilatory workload, which can impede the patient’s recovery. The need for accurate prediction applies to all phases of weaning, beginning with gradual reductions in mechanical support, when patients are able to support their own breathing, followed by trials of unassisted breathing till the child separated from the ventilator safely.
