Abstract:
This essay will emphasis the role of insulin pumps in treatment of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.IntroductionDiabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia as a cardinal feature. Diabetes in children is classified into two major types: type 1 (the most common) and type 2 diabetes. The cause of type 1 diabetes continues to be a mystery although both genetic and environmental factors appear to play a role, but the autoimmune mechanism appears to be the surest mechanism for the disease (American diabetes association, 2007).Insulin pump use may be implemented successfully in very young children where day time care is provided by paid caregiver. Insulin pump therapy is not only effective in treatment of young children but may be superior to multiple daily injections in minimizing episodes of sever low blood sugar (Weinzimer et al., 2004).
