Abstract:
Osteoporosis is a condition of reduced bone mass and impaired skeletal function. The pathogenesis of osteoporosis involves many different factors. It results from a complex interaction among genetic, hormonal and environmental influences. The disease is characterized by thinning of the bone cortices, thinning and loss of bone trabeculae and widening of the marrow cavities. Diagnosis of osteoporosis include medical history, clinical evaluation, laboratory studies, imaging, radiography and possibly bone biopsy. Fracture fixation in osteoporotic bone has presented a challenge to orthopeadic surgeons since the fixation methods were first available. Major principles for fixation of osteoporotic bone include devices with better bone purchase, long splintage, wide buttress & cement augmentation, IM nailing and preservation of blood supply. Serious consideration and careful preparation and planning are essential for successful fixation in osteoporotic patients. Because easy surgical solutions or breakthrough are less likely, presentation and medical treatment of osteoporotic conditions and osteoporotic fractures are the major hopes, if not the only ones.
