Abstract:
The ankle joint acts like a hinge. The unique design of the ankle makes it a very stable joint. This joint has to be stable in order to withstand one and half times of the body weight during walking and up to eight times the body weight during running. It is comprised of three bones (tibia, fibula and talus). Two groups of ligaments, the lateral collateral and medial collateral ligaments support this joint. Although the ligaments of the ankle are strong fibrous bands, they are often susceptible to injury due to the excessive movement of this joint during activity (Knight, 2005).Aim of the workThe aim of this work is to review ankle instability as a common problem that is usually missed , its possible risk factors , lines of management and outcome.
