Aim of the essay is to study the subject of cardiac ion channel regarding:-a. Definition and types of ion channels.b. Role of ion channels in normal heart.c. Effects of diseased ion channels on the heart.d. Effects of heart diseases on ion channels.e. Effects of drugs on ion channels. Ion channels are integral membrane proteins with characteristic features (Purves et al.,2001).The function of ion channels is to allow specific inorganic ions to diffuse rapidly down their electrochemical gradients across the lipid bilayer.(Alberts et al.,2002). They may be gated by extracellular ligands, changes in transmembrane voltage, or intracellular second messengers. (Ackerman and Clapham,1997)
