Abstract:
In this study we have tired to differentiate between brain abscess and most of the intracranial cystic lesions by means of DW imaging and PMRS.Diffusion weighted imaging is a new promising tool in discrimination between brain abscesses and cystic or necrotic brain tumors. Also, DW imaging can be used for follow up of brain abscess after aspiration or medical treatment.DW imaging provides unique information on diffusional properties of water in diseased brain. Marked difference in the signal intensity on diffusion weighted imaging between brain abscess and cystic or necrotic tumor is due to different physical and biochemical components of the central contents.Brain abscess appeared hyperintense relative to the normal brain parenchyma on diffusion weighted imaging and showed lower apparent diffusion coefficient in almost cases because of decreased diffusional properties of water relative to normal brain parenchyma. The study focuses on the value of diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and proton MR spectroscopy (PMRS) in discrimination of the intracranial cystic lesions.
