Primary Microsurgical Nerve Repair Of Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Palsy

Abstract:
One hundred and twenty two patients with obstetric brachial plexus palsy underwent brachial plexus exploration and reconstruction; two cases was excluded as was died just postoperative. males were 59.2% and 40.8% females. The mean age at surgery was 14 months. Patients were followed up for 12-96 months (mean 54 months). The right side was affected in 69.2% of cases and left side in 30.8% of cases. Bilateral affection was noticed in 1.6% of cases. Upper palsy was present in 20.8%, upper middle palsy in 30%, lower palsy was present in 3%, while total palsy was present in 45.8% cases.In patients presented early after birth, the indications of surgery were absent biceps contraction at the age of 3 months especially if associated with wrist DROP. In patients who presented late, the indications of surgery were biceps power less the grade three or flail anesthetic hand.
