During pregnancy profound immunologic, metabolic, endocrine and vascular changes occur, that are responsible for the changes of the skin and its appendages, both physiologic and pathologic.Physiologic skin changes in pregnancy include changes in pigmentation, connective tissue, vascular system, endocrine function, and mucous membrane as well as hair and nail changes.A new classification of the specific dermatoses of pregnancy is presented as follows: pemphigoid gestationis, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy which also called Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and atopic eruption of pregnancySkin diseases affected by pregnancy include autoimmune, inflammatory, metabolic, connective tissue disorders, tumors, and infectious diseases. Systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, dermatomyositis, and pemphigus vulgaris are autoimmune diseases worsening during pregnancy, but other autoimmune diseases as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis remit during pregnancy.
