The effect of topical pimecrolimus on psoriasis

Abstract:
Psoriasis is one of the most prevalent autoimmune skin diseases. Pimecrolimus is calcineurin inhibitors and function as immunosuppressants, in the treatment of psoriasis, the topical use of pimecrolimus is promisingObjective: We evaluated the efficacy, safety and tolerability of pimecrolimus 1% cream, a new, topical, non-steroidal, therapeutic option for the treatment of psoriasis. In addition, this work also carried out to establish its use in treatment of certain chronic type of psoriasis in which topical corticosteroid is relatively contraindicated. Moreover, a histopathological and immunohistochemical studies were also done.Methods: This work was conducted on 30 patients complaining of psoriasis selected from the outpatient clinic of the Dermatology and Venereology Department, Zagazig University Hospitals. Patients were evaluated using Physician’s Assessment of overall severity, Target Area Score, and Patient Self-Assessment. Hitsopathological examination and immunohistochemical assessment TGF-α CD3 CD20Results: Physician’s assessment of individual signs progressively improved throughout the study. Target area score at the end of the study showed that 10 patients showed complete clear or almost clear, 10 patients had mild disease, 6 patients had moderate disease while 4 patients had no response. As regard, TAS in related to duration it show statistical significance mostly in the first 2 weeks. Patients self-assessment at the end of the study showed that 4 patients had uncontrolled disease, 7 patients had limited disease control, 9 patients had good disease control and 10 patients had complete disease control.Conclusion: the results obtained in our study demonstrated that pimecrolimus 1% cream may be an effective treatment in intertriginous psoriasis; similar response may not be obtained in those with plaque psoriasis. Pimecrolimus 1% cream showed an excellent skin tolerability profile and did not induce skin atrophy or secondary skin infections.
