Abstract:
Prevention of perinatal asphyxia is the most important strategy in management of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Appropriate diagnosis of perinatal asphyxia also decreases the incidence of HIE. Appropriate treatment using drugs that reduce brain damage are effective such as N-methyl D-aspartate receptor antagonists, Cytokines, Xenone, and brain cooling (selective head cooling and systemic cooling). Follow-up of handicaped infants is also very important. The aim of the study was to record the data of all cases of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy who were admitted to NICU in Children Hospital in Zagazig University during the period from 1/8/2008 to 31/7/2009. Data of asphyxiated patients included: maternal medical and obstetric problems. Perinatal history: gestational age, sex, birth weight, fetal presentation, mode of delivery, risk factors, clinical presentation, clinical examination( general, systemic and local), laboratory investigations(blood gases, CBC, liver and kidney functions and blood electrolytes). Radiology is performed when facilities are available.
