Abstract:
AbstractThis study was carried out to study the changes occurring on characteristic of ICU admitted COPD patients in acute exacerbation. For this purpose 100 patients ( 76 males and 24 females with a mean age of 64.68±6.87 years ) with acute exacerbation of COPD admitted at the ICU of Respiratory Department, Zagazig University Hospitals were included. They were classified according to management they received into 3 groups.Group I: They under conservative treatment only. They were 20 patients; 14 males and 6 females with a mean age of 62.4±6.62 years.Group II: They under NIV plus conservative treatment. They were 20 patients; 14 males and 6 females with a mean age of 65.33±6.8 years.Group III: They under invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) plus conservative treatment. They were 60 patients; 48 males and 12 females with a mean age of 65±7.16 years.On admission to ICU the followings were carried out for all patients:- Full medical history from the patient (if possible) or his relatives.- Full clinical examination: (General & local).- Plain chest and heart X – ray.- Arterial blood gases analysis.
