Abstract:
The pattern of cardiac diseases in a certain population is affected by a wide range of determining factors. These include socioeconomic factors, genetic susceptibilities and status of the healthcare system of diagnosis and therapy. In the current study, we aimed to study the pattern of heart disease in the attendants of the pediatric cardiology department and outpatient clinic through one year. Our study included 500 cases who were classified into 3 main groups with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) group constituting 54.0 % of the studied cases, congenital heart disease (CHD) representing 41.6 % of patients and cardiomyopathy group presented only 4.4 % of the studied cases. The associated clinical sequellae in RHD patients were rheumatic activity in 74 cases (27.4 %), congestive heart failure in 113 cases (41.9 %) and infective endocarditis in 24 cases (8.9 %).Rheumatic carditis was the most frequent recurring rheumatic fever criterion. MS + MR was the commonest valvular lesion detected. Only 23.3 % of cases received regular penicillin prophylaxis. In the congenital heart disease group, VSD was the commonest reported anomaly (30.29 %). Down syndrome was the most frequent associated congenial syndrome. Positive consanguinity was the commonest associated risk factor. In the cadiomyopathy group, dilated cardiomyopathy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy constitute 54.5 % and 45.5 % of cardiomyopathy cases respectively. In general, this study shows a peculiar pattern of heart disease the studied cases. This pattern agrees with those reported from other developing countries with some variations that are attributed to socioeconomic and geographic causes or differences in the study design and performance.
