The term ataxia denotes inability to make smooth, accurate and coordinated movements usually due to a disorder of the cerebellum and / or sensory pathways in the posterior column of the spinal cord . The main cause of ataxia is failure of the cerebellum to modify muscle tone and contractions to achieve coordination. The involvement of mitochondrial and respiratory chain dysfunction and oxidative stress in Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) pathogenesis suggests that FRDA may be amenable to treatment with combined antioxidant and bioenergetic therapy.Treatable causes of ataxia should be always in mind while evaluating any patient with ataxia. If a treatable cause is identified and treated, the life of the patient will be greatly changed.Since many causes of ataxia are untreatable, and treatment is mainly supportive, many physicians have forgotten to treat the cause. The aim of this work is to study different causes of treatable ataxia, diagnostic tools, and possible lines of management so as not to lose hope of permenant recovery and not to deprive a patient from possible treatment.
