Abstract:
The menisci of the knee have an important role in load-bearing and shock absorption within the joint. They may also function as secondary stabilizers have a proprioceptive role, and aid the lubrication and nutrition of the articular cartilage. Complete or partial loss of a meniscus can have damaging effects on a knee leading to serious long-term sequelae. (McDermott and Amis, 2006).Due to the long-term effects of total meniscectomy, partial meniscectomy is performed when the characteristics of the lesion are not conducive to successful repair. This procedure can be performed via an open or arthroscopic technique. (Rivas et al., 2004).Generally, following knee arthroscopy, an aggressive rehab approach can be taken. The good news is that no major precautions or contra-indications are present and ROM and strength can be progressed as tolerated. This includes the following procedures: partial medial or lateral meniscectomy, debridement of cartilage and joint surfaces, removal of a loose body, plicae excision, and lateral release. (Matthews et al., 1996).
