Abstract:
The aim of this study is to compare the safty and efficacy of conventional versus trypan blue dye assisted CCC in pediatric cataract surgery. The study was carried out on 60 eyes of 30 selected bilateral pediatric cataract patients (9 females, 21 males) attending the ophthalmic outpatients clinic of Zagazig university hospital (from April 2004 to November 2006).They were admitted for ACCC with or without IOL implantation. The patients were divided into two groups:Group A: this group includes thirty eyes in which trypan blue assisted capsulorhexis was done.Group B: this group includes thirty eyes in which conventional CCC was done.Complete ophthalmic examination was performed for all patients to select patients suitable for this study. Medical assessment and laboratory investigations were performed as routinely done for cataract surgery.Creating ACCC without dye was more difficult in children younger than 5 years than in those 5 years and older. No intraoperative complications occur in 83.66% and 66.66% of children in group A and B respectively.ACCC was completed in 85.71%, 57.14% in children younger than 5 years in group A and B respectively. While in children 5 years and older it was completed in 93.7% and 87.5% in group A and B respectively.Too small anterior capsule opening with difficult IOL implantation occurs in 3.33%, 10% in group A and B respectively.Too large anterior capsule opening with difficult in- the-bag IOL implantation occurs in 3.33%, 6.66% in group A and B respectively. No post operative complications related to capsulorhexis occurs in 23.33%, 16.6% in group A, B respectively.
