Abstract:
Kawasaki disease is still a dilemma for pediatricians, especially its atypical or incomplete presentation. The current diagnostic criteria appear inadequate, and the early diagnosis frequently remains challenging. Also its etiology unknown till now. Coronary ectasia develop in about 15% to 25% of untreated children; treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin in the acute phase of the disease reduces this risk to 5%. We present in the this study the recent literature on Kawasaki disease and focuses on the latest data concerning the disease etiology and pathogenesis, therapy in aggressive cases, and new tools in detecting and monitoring cardiac alterations. Also we present the most recent algorithm for the evaluation and treatment of patients in whom incomplete or atypical Kawasaki disease is suspected Keywords: Kawasaki disease, Ischemic heart disease, Vasculitis, delayed diagnosis, Coronary artery aneurysms, Myocardial infarction, Echocardiography, Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG), Cardiac evaluation
