Abstract:
Objective : This study was performed to• Determine the prevalence of CD in children with insulin dependant diabetes mellitus in EGYPT • Estimate the clinical effects of a gluten free diet in patients with diabetes and celiac disease Research design and methods :The present study included thirty children with type 1 diabetes , they were 12 males and 18 females , their ages ranged from 2 to 15 years The diagnosis of celiac disease was suspected in patients with antitissue transglutaminase antibodies and antigliadin antibodies and total IgA and conformed by intestinal biopsies Results : from 30 diabetic patients , there were 4 seropositive cases the intestinal biopsies of these cases had shown villous atrophy . there were a significant difference between seropositive and seronegative cases according to the glycemic control , anti TTe IgA , other screening tests and serum ferritin Conclusion : This study showed high prevalence of CD in children with 1DDM , also serological tests and small intestinal biopsy will remain the cornerstone of diagnosis of CD . treatment options other than the restrictive gluten free diet remain limited .
