Abstract:
AbstractHyperbilirubinemia continues to be a common problem of term and near term neonates .each year more than (60% of infants in U.S. developed jaundice , However in Egypt about 20.4% developed jaundice yearly.Phototherapy is now the standard form of treatement for infants with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Though gradual in its effect, it finally produces a prolonged reduction in bilirubin values, retreatment with phototherapy is relatively rare.Hyperbilirubinemia is a common and in most instances a benign condition in the newborn . nevertheless sever and untreated form of indirect Hyperbilirubinemia is a highly associated with toxic damage of nervous system .Phototherapy is an appropriate and relatively safe measure in reducing indirect bilirubin level in newborns especially true when serum bilirubin level has not reached the level to induce kernicterous ..Phototherapy plays a significant role in the treatment and prevention of Hyperbilirubinemia as well as the management of subsequent complication in newborn .Phototherapy plays a significant role in treatment and prevention of hyperbilirubinemia as well as the management of subsequent complications in the newborn .However, this treatment modality may itself result in the development of hypocalcaemia and create serious complications including convulsion and related condition .
