Abstract:
The most difficult problem we faced in the management of pterygia is their frequent and aggressive recurrences following surgical removal. In addition, no surgical procedure was found to be universally accepted as being perfect. With subsequent recurrences, the rate of formation is quicker, the inflammatory process is more intense, the subsequent fibrosis is more severe and the recurrent pterygium is more destructive and progressive than the original one. Many ophthalmologists have tried different techniques to minimize the incidence of recurrence with little or no complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of limbal conjunctival autograft transplantation technique in surgical management of recurrent pterygium using excision technique and the control group was conjunctival flap procedure.Forty eyes of forty patients with recurrent pterygia were selected and included in this study. Selection was done from patients attending the out patient clinic ophthalmology department of Zagazig University Hospital from April 2002 to November 2004. The patients were of different ages, sex and occupations.
