Aim of the work: Estimation of the degree of metabolic control of diabetic patients at the outpatient diabetes clinic, Zagazig University Hospitals & Determination of the factors most probably correlated with good glycemic control.Subject &methods: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted at diabetes outpatient clinic, Zagazig University Hospitals. The study included 300 diabetic patients with ages ranging from 17 to 70 years old, 143 females and 157 males. The level of glycemic control as measured by the level of Hb A1c was correlated with the following variables(related with the following variables:Age-Gender-Residence--Educational level-Socio-economic status-Type of diabetes-Presence of family history-Duration of disease-Type of treatment-Frequency of counseling ).Results: The average level of HBA1c was 10.4%. 33 patients had HBA1c levels ≤ 7% representing 11% of patients (group I) ,115 patients had HBA1c levels between 7-9% (38 %) (group II), and 152 patients had HBA1c levels >9% (51%) (group III). Our study has found that glycemic control as measured by HbA1c is significantly correlated with the following variables: age of the patient ,duration of the disease, educational level, socioeconomic status ,positive family history, type of treatment, and frequency of counseling. The correlation with the following variables was not statistically significant: gender, residence, and type of diabetes. Conclusion: The current study shows that glycemic control is less than optimal. Increasing the awareness of health care professional of the comprehensive management of diabetes mellitus is recommended.
