Portal hypertension is defined as an increase in the portal venous pressure greater than 10 mmHg. It usually develops as a complication of cirrhosis and is directly responsible for the development of variceal hemorrhage and ascites. Variceal hemorrhage is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. So, the current medical management dictates that all cirrhotic patients without a history of variceal bleeding undergo endoscopic screening to detect large varices and this will expose the patients to unnecessary endoscopy and increase the burden on endoscopy units and man power owing to the growing pool of chronic liver disease.The study of portal hypertension requires generally invasive procedures such as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.Doppler ultrasound has resulted in a significant extension of the role of ultrasound in examining the abdomen and studying of the portal hemodynamics.The aim of the present study was to find out a non-invasive prediction of the oesophageal varices in patients with compensated cirrhosis which may help to relief medical, social and economic costs.The study comprised 70 patients with compensated cirrhosis who were divided during the study into two groups; the variceal group proved by endoscopy which comprised 45 patients and the non-variceal group which included 25 patients. All of these patients referred either due to exertional dull aching left hypochondrial pain and easy fatigability or to
