Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to find out a non-invasiveprediction of oesophageal varices in patients with chronic liver diseasewhich may help to relief medical, social and economic costs. In thisstudy, we evaluated the thickness of the middle layer of the anterioroesophageal wall and Doppler study of the portal vein as non-invasive,cheap and rapid methods for prediction of OV.Portal hypertension is defined as an increase in the portal venouspressure greater than 10 mmHg. It usually develops as a complication ofcirrhosis and is directly responsible for the development of varicealhemorrhage and ascites. Variceal hemorrhage is a cause of significantmorbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. So, the current medicalmanagement dictates that all cirrhotic patients without a history ofvariceal bleeding should undergo endoscopic screening to detect largevarices and this will expose the patients to unnecessary hazards ofendoscopy and increase the burden on endoscopy units
