Transrectal ultrasonic evaluation of the prostatic size

The study was performed on (41) patients from urology departmentZagazig University (11 cystoprostatectomy for bladder cancer and 30open prostatectomy for BPH) pre-operative prostatic size estimation wasdone using Bruel & Kjaer 1849 Console for calculation of transverse,diameter (x) and anteroposterior diameter (y) . Two formulae were usedfor estimationformula 1:- Volume = rc/6 (x)2 (y)formula 2:- Volume = rc/6 [(x + y)/2]3Correlation coefficient of the estimated volume with the actualvolume obtained post-operatively was computered. For the wholeprostate, formula 1, gave better correlation with the actual volume. Forthe enucleated adenomata formula 2 gave better correlation with theactual volume specially in adenomota greater than 60cc.
