Abstract:
Secretory oti tis media, defined as a collectionof fluid of variable character in the middle earcavity, is one of the commonest diseases in children.Many factors have been implicated in the patho-genesis of secretory otitis media, but the most impo-rtan t and common es t one is to eus tach ian tube obs t-ruction and dysfunction.It has been reported by many investigators thatmiddle ear effusion are sterile, however, results ofrecent studies indicate that bacterial pathogens arepresent in middle ear effusion.This work was done to evaluate effect of myrin-gotomy and grommet tube insertion in treatment ofsecretory otitis media and eustachian tube dysfunctionin children, the cases were followed both clinicallyand audiologically. We had found that average age was7.1 years There was male sex preponderance (55.0% wereboys). On otoscopy, we found loss of semi transparencyand retraction of the tympanic membrane, cone of lightwas absent or disturbed and there was retraction ofhandle of malleus. By penumatic otoscopy, we foundrestriction of the mobility of the tympanic membranes..
