Abstract:
The aim of thediagnostic value ofversus surgical openhead and neck masses.present work is to compare thefine needle aspiration cytologybiopsy as a diagnostic tool toThe material of this work included sixty ninepatients with different head and neck lumps, 32 malesand 37 females with an age ranging between one andseventy years.The cases were classified according to the anatom-ical sites into 5 groups: lymph nodes masses, thyroidgland masses, salivary gland masses, nose and paranasalsinuses masses and finally the miscellaneous massesgroup.Lymph node masses group: Out of 7 cases diagnosed cyto-logically as benign lymph node lesions, one case wasproved histopathologically to be malignant, giving anaccuracy of 85.7%. Out of 13 cases diagnosed cytologic-ally as malignant lesions, 2 cases were proved histopa-thologically to be benign, giving an accuracy of 84.7%.
