Abstract:
Nephrotic syndrome is characterized by proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema and hyper cholesterolemia. It is now believed that free radicals have an important role in thepathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome.Antioxidants has been used in treatment ofhephrotic syndrome inexperimental animals and gave good results. Our aim is to study the role of antioxidants when given withcorticosteroids in the treatment ofnephrotic syndrome in pediatrics. Our study was carried out in Pediatrics Department of ZagazingUniversity Hospital from January 2003 to September 2003 and included 80children which are clssified into three groups.Group I, comprising 30 nephrotic patients given the ordinarycorticosteroids regimen for one month.Group II, comprising 30 nephrotic patients given the ordinarycorticosteroids regimen in addition to the antioxidants formula for onemonth.Group III involved 20 healthy children selected as the control group.Oxidative stress byproducts were measured which areMalondialdehyde and nitric oxide. And antioxidants (Vitamin E, Zinc,Selenium and Catalase) in our 80 children. These measurements had been done twice, one at the start of thestudy and the other at the end of one-month of treatment
