TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS CONJUNCTIVITIS

Conjunctivitis is still one of the most frequently seen eye disease especially in infants and children in Egypt, it is mainly due to infective causes . The incidence of bacterial conjunctivitis is highest in children and young adults.The aim of the present study is to report the efficacy of povidone –iodine as a treatment for acut infectious conjunctivitis .Acute bacterial conjunctivitis and fungal conjunctivitis were evaluated in this study .This study was conducted over period of 12 months starting from1-3-2004- to 30-2-2005. Pateints included were examined during this period in the ophthalmic out patient clinic in Zagazig university hospital. This study were carried on 135 eyes of 70 patients suffering from acute conjunctivitis .In all patients we seen signs of inflammation as hypermia, edema and discharge (purulent, mucopurulent) then we done bacteriological study, the sample were colllecting from lower fornix of each eye on sterial cotton swab and cultured on blood agar and neitrent agar, chocolate agar and on sabaroud ̉s media for detaction of fungal infection. All this media prepared in the bacteriological laboratory .all patients took treatment before the results of culture appeared .
