Abstract:
The most effective therapy for pterygium is surgery . Numeroussurgical techniques have been proposed for pterygium removal ,but none of them was universally accepted because of the highrecurrence rate . The reported frequency of recurrence for primarypterygium varies widely for different procedures , ranging from24-67 % of cases after simple excision by the bare scleratechnique to 0-47 % of cases after excision combined withconjunctival autografting or adjanctive therapy .The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation technique in themanagement of case with primary and recurrent pterygia.30 pterygia in 28 patients were operated upon using limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation . All patients fulfilled thefollowing criteria :-1-At least 6 months should have passed after last operation forrecurrent cases .2-Pterygial growth over the cornea was 3mm or more .3- All pterygia had to be causing significant irritation to thepatients despite topical treatment .4-All the pterygia had to be causing significant cosmeticdisfigurement .5-No other ocular surface pathology was present .The patients were followed-up for 6 months for good graftplantaion , re-epithelialization of donor sites , presence or absenceof scar formation and recurrence . Complete ophthalmologicalexamination was done after one day , one week , 2 weeks , onemonth , 2 months , 3 months and 6 months .
