Study Of Sleep Disorders In Chronic Renal Failure Patients

Sleep disorders in chronic renal failure patients (CRF) were suggested to play a role in the increased morbidity and mortality among dialysis patients.Moreover, the levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and inteleukin-6 (IL-6) in CRF could also be related to the sleep fragmentation and sleep complaints in those patients.Sleep studies using polysomnography and sleep questionnaires might help in diagnosing sleep problems in CRF patients, so that any correctable factors could help improve sleep quality and longevity in those population.This work was done to study sleep disorders in CRF patients under different modalities of treatment, using sleep questionnaires and sleep study with polysomnography. We planned also to measure serum levels of IGF-I and IL-6 during wakefulness and sleep, to correlate them to disturbed sleep in CRF patients.To make this study, 30 patients with CRF under different modalities of treatment, in addition to 10 healthy subjects as control, were subjected to careful medical history, clinical examination and routine investigation.Exclusion criteria included very old age, marked obesity, advanced liver cell failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, malignancy, infection, organic neurological disease and use of immunosuppressive or hypnotic drugs.We classified them into 4 groups, as follows:Group I: 12 Patients with CRF on regular hemodialysis (HD).Group II: 8 Patients with CRF on intermittent peritoneal dialysis.Group III: 10 Patients with CRF on conservative treatment.Group IV: 10 Healthy control subjects.They were subjected to the following:-Careful history taking.-Complete clinical examination.-Routine laboratory investigation.
