Abstract:
The lack of agreement between various studies can be explained to acertain extent by methodologic prodlems. In some studies the risk ofdeveloping deep sternal wound infections (mediasnitis) was evaluated, andin others both deep and superficial infections were evaluated together.Further, in other studies all sternal complication including instability wereanalyzed together, whereas in others, sternal infection was not difficult andcomparison between studies futile. Some studies with only a few cases ofmediastinitis have several statistical power problems. In addition, if only afew patients have the risk factor in question, its potential importance maynot be recognized. On the other hand, multiple statistical testing may leadto false-positive significance, a problem that can occur when a largenumber op factors are analyzed. However, even in studies that do not havemost of these problems, the risk factors recognized differ substantially .Also early diagnosis of the disease seems to be very difficult withouthigh suspicious and meticulous care and also effort to develop and analysestools of diagnosis is essential as well as aggressive trial to control anddecrease the morbidity of this complications.Yet our study proves that post operative infection yet a devastatingcomplication did happen in our institute in percentage comparable to othercenter and that only by following the roles of antisepses meticuloussurgical technique and close post operative this percentage could bedecreased.
