Abstract:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of adjuvant radiological ovarian castration plus chemotherapy versus ovarian castration alone versus chemotherapy alone in premenopausal womenwith operable breast cancer and positive axillary nodes. In the periodfrom May 1986 to June 1987,103 patients were entered into thisstudy. After surgery; radical or modified radical mastectomy, patientswere randomized between three treatment groups; group A, to receiveradiological ovarian castration plus cortisone therapy ( 5mg /day forone year ), group B, to receive chemotherapy ( 6 cycles of CMF )and group C, to receive radiological ovarian castration plus CMF(6 cycles). All patients received postoperative loco- regional radio-therapy. Sixteen patients were precluced due to different causesleaving a total of 87 evaluable patients; 27 in g roup A and 30 ineach of groups Band C. The minimum follow-up period was 15 months.Twenty patients in each of groups A and C and 25 in group B havecompleted 24 months of follow-up. The three treatment groups werealmost comparable with respect to different prognostic factors.CMF was found to produce a statistically significant better 2-yearsurvival and also better but nonsignificant 2-year disease- free survivalcompared to ovarian castration. Analysis of data according to different.
