Abstract:
The mean values of Apgar score at 1, 5 minutes were significantly lower in acutely as asphyxiated neonates or those exposed to chronic hypoxic when compared to the control group.Mean values of pH, Hco3 showed a highly significant decrease in acutely asphyxiated neonates or those exposed to chronic hypoxia when compared to the control group.Mean values of serum iron, TIBC and TS showed a highly significant increase in acutely asphyxiated neonates or those exposed to chronic hypoxia when compared to the control group. As regards acute asphyxia, serum iron showed a highly significant negative correlation with Apgar at 1, 5 min, pH and it showed a highly significant association with delivery room resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, passage of intrauterine meconium and showed a significant association with HIE staging.
