Abstract:
Extensive oesophagogastric devascularization with oesophgeal transection stappling is a safe, effective for long term control of variceal rebleed in patients with portal hypertension especially those with non cirrhotic portal hypertension who have good liver function. Through variceal recurrence take place in a small percentage of patients, the risk of rebleeding remains low. It is recommended for control of variceal bleeding when non operative measures failed and as elective option in patients with extrahepatic portal venous obstruction where suitable shuntable veins are not available. For patients with non cirrhotic portal hypertension it is good alternative to the warren shunt, being free from encephalopathy particularly when expertise to perform shunt surgery is not available.
