Abstract:
The present study was carried out during the period from Junuary 1998 to December 1998 I on forty female patients with different breast lumps I aiming at evaluation of different modalities of investigations for these lumps before surgery to select most accurate and suitable diagnostic method and to avoid an unnecessary large number of biopsies.Patients were examined clinically I radio-logically and histopathologically for detection of the nature of breast masses ..Clinical examination remains indispensable for detection of different breast lesions and its accuracy was 80.5 % .( relatively higher than the results in developed countries because our patients never come very early) .Bilateral mammography was done for all patients, it demonstrated specific changes clearly and accurately and it can differentiate fairly well between benign and malignant lesions with accuracy of 83.3 % . Most of false positives and false negatives were due to dense breasts of young age groups . Mammography remains the method of choice in radiology of the breast. The primary problem with the routine use of mammography lies in the possible adverse effects of radiation.
