Abstract:
The nerve of pterygoid canal vidian nerve is themain autonomic innervation of three fourths of the nasalmucosa and the lacrimal gland. It consists of sympathe-tic nerves (the deep petrosal) and parasympathetic nerves(the greater superfocial petrosal).Presynaptic fibres of the sympathetic nerve synapsein one of the cervical sympathetic ganglion, and the post-synaptic fibres ascend along the carotid artery. The deep petrosal nerve branches off t~e post syn-aptic nerve fibre along the internal carotid artery.Thisis joined by the greater superficial petrosal nerve andthe two pass through the vidian canal as a vidian nerve. The parasympathetic fibres synapse in the spheno-palatine ganglion and the sympathetic fibres pass throughor around it.The autonomic fibres enters the nose as the poster-ior nasal nerve joined by somatic sensory fibres of themaxillary nerve. The both division of the autonomic innervation isunder control of higher autonomic centres in the reticular
