Abstract:
Epilepsy is more common than generally recognized by most physicians andis the most serious neurologic disorder that affects people of all ages.Diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, has in recent years become a team effortthat benefits from the services of neurologists, specialized nursing personnel, neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists, social workers and especially important is the inputof a neuroradiologist with expertise in epilepsy.Medically refractory epilepsy is a substantial health problem in a large number ofpatients who often have structural brain abnormality that may be amenable to surgery.MR imaging is the study of choice for assessment of epilepsy, it is of keyimportance in identifying underlying causes of epilepsies and in assisting themultidisciplinary approach to locate the seizure focus or foci in the brain.Electroencephalography remains an essential diagnostic test for epilepsy, butunfortunately is an imperfect marker of the disorder as EEG abnormalities canpropagate widely resulting in false laterlization and localization. Thus, invasive EEG, has been required for confirmation of the seizure focuspreoperatively.
