Abstract:
Asymptomatic bacteriuria is considered present, if on two or moreconsecutive occasions ~ 100.000 colony forming units (C.F.U)/ml arefound in aseptically collected midstream urine, granted that the samemicroorganism is isolated.Asymptomatic bacteriuria is associated with a very small risk of anacute symptomatic episode of urinary tract infection in early pregnancy lessthan 1% but with a substantial risk (30-60%) during the last trimester.Both clinical and epidemiologic evidence indicate a strong associationbetween untreated asymptomatic bacteriuria and low birth weight infants,preterm delivery therefore, early screening for bacteriuria is recommendedin the ambulatory obstetrics population to effect treatment.The aim of this work was to study the association betweenasymptomatic bacteriuria and vaginal infection during the first trimester ofpregnancy.This study was conducted at Obstetrics and Gynaecology departmentand Clinical Pathology department, Zagazig University Hospitals dunngthe period from December 2000 to November 2001.The study population included 200 normal pregnant women during thefirst trimester of pregnancy.All the cases were subjected for:
