Study of assessment of different clinical, biochemical, endoscopic and radiological parameters of disease activity for patients with ulcerative colitis

Abstract:
This study included 30 subjects of both sexes who were selected from inpatient department and outpatient clinic of Internal Medicine Department, Zagazig University Hospitals between November 2003 and November 2004. They were classified into the following groups:(1) Patient group:Inclusion criteria:It included 20 patients; 12 males and 8 females. Their ages ranged from 16-62 years with mean ± SD (31.7 years ± 11.6). The included patients presented by prolonged and recurrent history of frequent loose stools associated with abdominal pain, dysentery with or without bleeding per rectum as in table (7). The diagnosis was suspected by typical history, confirmed by endoscopic and histopathological examination.Exclusion criteria:The included patients were free from other causes of frequent bowel habits such as parasitic infestations, malignant conditions, colonic polyposis, amoebic dysentery, prolonged bacillary dysentery and drug induced diarrhea such as chemotherapy, antibiotics, gold therapy and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which induce colonic ulceration. Also, any patient with hepatic (unrelated to ulcerative colitis) and/or renal diseases was excluded from this study.(2) Control group:It included 10 subjects; 4 males and 6 females.
