Abstract:
Corticosteroids are undoubtedly the pharmacotherapeutic agentswith the broadest application in otolaryngology .This study was done to test the relative effect of corticosteroid onthe organ of Corti and the effect of corticosteroid treatment on gentamicinototoxicity .This study was carried out on 40 Guinea pigs out of them 10animals as a control group, aside from the control group, one group ofguinea pigs were injected with dexamethasone and two groups of guineapigs were injected with therapeutic and double doses of gentamycin withconcomitant or pre treatment dexamethasone . Histological examinationwas done using the light microscope.Histological examinations of the animals injected withdexamethasone showed that the organ of Corti was intact .Animals injected with therapeutic dose of gentamycin plus dexamethasonecurrently or a pre treatment course showed no pathological changes.Animals injected with double therapeutic dose of gentamycin plusdexamethasone concomitant showed sever degeneration of hair cells in theform of hydropic degeneration. With double therapeutic dose ofgentamycin plus a pre treatment course of dexamethasone showed lesssever and reversible type of degeneration (Cloudy Swelling) ..
